I have been wondering about this since 1978. The short story, "The Last Rung on the Ladder" was published for the first time in Night Shift. Or so it is said. But, I have the clearest memory of reading it in Cavalier magazine in either 1962 or 1963. Our school sold magazine subscriptions and my dad got one to that magazine. He did not bring it home, he kept it at his Phillip's 66 station in Belvedere, SC. I read the story many times because I thought at the time, it was one of the best stories I had ever read. I know Mr King did have some of his work published in the magazine as well. So, why the deception? Is this the story that a man whose name I do not recall accused Mr King of stealing for so long? His remark of "If I am lying why does he not sue me?" has stuck in my mind for many years.
