He is described to sound as a black singer. A manager is dying (and actually died, I suppose) to have him cover "Hang on, Sloopy" (I would really like to hear that, actually). He is described as having long hair.
All of that, in 1980, would make me think of the Rock 'n Roll 1960s.
This is Darryl Hall of Hall & Oates in the 1980s. He sang "blue eyed soul" and was frequently described as sounding like a "black singer."

I'm currently drawing a(nother) pic of Larry Underwood and this time update was troublesome in some aspects.

He is described to sound as a black singer. A manager is dying (and actually died, I suppose) to have him cover "Hang on, Sloopy" (I would really like to hear that, actually). He is described as having long hair.

All of that, in 1980, would make me think of the Rock 'n Roll 1960s.

But in 1990, I guess I could think of the 1960s, too, but I have other images in my head, both from the 1970s and 1980s. So I don't have as clear an image (sound?) of Larry in my mind as I would if things happened 10 years earlier.

had another thought...I think this is it.
Frosty the Snowman. Bumpity bump bump, look at Frosty go! I hope I'm not mishearing lyrics again. That happens from time to time.
And yeah, Lawrence Welk was on, not that the kids in the house watched. A one! and a two!, you got the bubbles coming up from behind the set. I liked the bubbles, all those happy campers cutting up the dance floor. There was usually one couple with a little more zip than the others...gin, I think. Ginned up. Wondered if Leon Redbone ever played a bass fiddle, whutchamacallums. Somebody. That guy...Pablo something or other? I think he used a thing...a stick with that cat gut strung from end to end. He played. Can't think of his last name...might not have his first name. Pablo Casals? Something about the G-string. Instrument.

I had a few black friends back in the day when Hall & Oates came out with their first album. This was way before MTV and YouTube, so no one knew what they looked like until they had their first major TV appearance. I can tell you that my black friends were very surprised (as were the rest of us) that these guys were white.
