Can someone 'esplain' to me why Herschel's head was still alive?

By the end of the Talking Dead, they mentioned what I was already thinking by the end of the episode...
I began to wonder about a Michonne/Rick 'ship. You have to kill the brain, Haunted, cutting the head off isn't enough. And everyone's infected, so, you die, you turn.
Thank you, Ebdim9th. It was sad to see such a noble soul in that state.
Right on, yeah, it was sad, but they said on the Talking Dead, all favorite characters get big, gruesome send-offs like that....
I gots to admit I didn't understand the comment until it was explained in The Talking Dead, then I loved it
We didn't watch Talking Dead. My husband and son both thought it was in reference to Carl and Michonne having a close friendship and when Michonne goes out on runs she usually bring back comic books for Carl.
You realize you can get side-swiped asking this question, but here goes.
Though zombies are dead for practical purposes, their brains keep working in a rudimentary way, a primitive way. Since only the head was severed, the rudimentary brain was still functional.

Brain contains the 'life' (such as it is). Since his brain wasn't broken, his head was still alive...ish
Hershel's head was still alive because the brain wasn't killed. And for the shock factor.
Greg Nicotero pulled out the head for the benefit of the Talking Dead's audience and Chris Hardwick fed it pudding....

I thought for a while that Rick was done for but he spoke before I could decide if I was sad. He would have been just one more of many good people who have been lost
Rick isn't the bestest leader, he's not very good at reading people. I think it was pretty dumb of Rick to think he could reason with a madman. I think he should have given the prison to the governor. Course I believed the Governor would have let them leave unharmed lol
