I liked it too. I also enjoy how sweet it starts off. As is goes you start to get that "uh oh" feeling because you know something is coming. Then the end.....
For reasons I can't explain very well, this is one of my favorite short stories, too.
There is not much in the way of explanation. We are simply given a situation we believe we recognize and dislocation does the rest, but it's the imagery that sticks with me.
The fresh air. The fresh flowers. The transistor radio. The kids who are there . . . then gone.
I love this story, I have read it many many times. As a kid/teen, I loved it for its bizarre twist, as an adult that still plays into it, But as an adult, I love trying to read into and find the author’s theme or extrapolate my own. What I wonder is if Mr. King meant this to be an analogy for the Vietnam War? I thank it fits very well. Am I the only one who sees it?
