...haven't watched him much of late due to my work schedule...but his is a real genius, even if you don't acre for his sardonic/sarcastic style....he has earned his final run across the stage...

I usually am asleep too GNT so I don't see him much anymore either. When I am up he is on, not Leno or the new guy for me. He is my favorite right after Mr. Carson and I had always hoped that he would have filled JC's chair. He certainly has earned his retirement.
Carson will always be my favorite.
I liked Letterman better in the 80s and 90s. I'll never forget the night that he reunited Sonny & Cher.
Happy retirement, Dave!

My schedule has never really allowed me to enjoy "late night" programming, but Letterman was for me was a sort of bridge between Carson and the newer breed of hosts. Some of the them rely too much video gags.

Liked his edgy style back 10 years or more ago. Didn't care for the creepiness vibes he gave off when he had an attractive lady on the show. For the past decade, his often-acidic style ran thin for us. Funny turned to annoying.

Once every three weeks or so, on a Friday night, we catch Craig Ferguson. The first 20 times I saw him, I never failed to get at least one good hearty laugh. And while I still think some comic genius still radiates, it's not as often or as bright, and maybe it's me getting used to his shtick.

However, I think that, contractually, Craig Ferguson has first right of refusal to be the Letterman replacement.

I used to watch Letterman a lot but stopped several years ago. We all fall on different parts of the political spectrum, but I stopped watching him when, several months after Obama's first election, Letterman persisted in personal attacks on Sarah Palin and her family night after night. If a comedian pokes fun at all candidates leading up to an election, all's fine and good and is expected, but it usually ends there, or at least tapers down. I just got tired of it after a while so turned the channel.
