The scientific names Hooper gives as possible suspects were longimanus (Oceanic Whitecap) and Isurus Paucus (Long-fin Mako). Both are kind of silly as neither of those species are common to coastal Massachusetts waters. The short-fin Mako would have made sense as they are common in NE waters. The whitetips are deepwater sharks. Common culprit in shipwrecks and plane crashes that happen in the open ocean. Very rarely found in shallower water. In fact, the whitetip was probably the species that killed most of the sailors in the USS Indianapolis disaster that Quint talks about in the movie.
