Heard recently in TV commercial: "...with the Sleep Number Bed, get a deeper and sounder sleep...". I don't believe that the advertising people who wrote this commercial were unaware; what really bothers me is that I suspect that the temptation to out-of-the-blue create words which seem to sound better in a specific context (sneaking in sounder instead of using the phrase more soundly because the word deeper was already chosen) is perceived desirable to the public. I just don't like that kind of thinking.

I always thought "sounder" was a word?
Sound, sounder, soundest. Kind of odd-sounding, I admit.
Or do you mean, if I get a sound sleep, it can't get more sound? Like something can't get more perfect?
It does sound strange to say, "Two nights ago I got a sound sleep, and last night's was even sounder."
Now the word "sound" is starting to sound soundly like a non-word in my head...

You know, you're right, sounder is proper. When I looked up the definition I missed the second one. Thanx! I still don't like the sound of it, though.

Agreed! I feel much better now! We'll be the Sounderlesses. Or the Sounderlessi.
Ooh, I like the Sounderlessi. I have always liked to make those "i" plurals from words that end in "us."
One fungus, two fungi. One octopus, two octopi. I even like to use it for words that don't follow that rule: hippopotami, abaci, citri, circi, and my favorite, walri.
