The Sun Dog...I must have read that when I was maybe 11 and it still pops into my head from time to time when I take pictures. I thought all 4 stories in that book were great though, Langoliers......what a goodie. I have always been sorry I ever watched the film of it though, my mental image is so much cheesier and fake looking for it. Recent read was 1922 and I liked that one too!

It was "Night Shift" that made me a Stephen King fan and also made me want to write, so many of my favorites are from that early era. Here is a list off the top of my head...

The Jaunt
Mrs. Todd's Shortcut
Survivor Type
The Boogeyman
Cain Rose Up
All That You Love Will Be Carried Away
Children of the Corn
Crouch End
Gramma
Graveyard Shift
Grey Matter
Here There Be Tygers
The Lawnmower Man
Quitters Inc.
Suffer the Little Children
Word Processor of the Gods

And The Breathing Method and A Very Tight Place.
We have very similar taste, MM :) I'd add 1408--it gets overshadowed by the movie, but DAMN that was one creepy, disorienting story! THE LAST RUNG ON THE LADDER has stuck in my mind--I think I could just about repeat it verbatum, and I haven't read it in years--since I was 13, so I have to add that one, too.

We do . . .I noticed that a while back . . .I love 1408 too, didn't really care much for the movie --thought it was just 'OK' . . .The Last Rung on The Ladder would make a nice movie.

Something tells me in my heart that The Breathing Method could really happen . . .it's all in a person's will. Call me crazy . . .

Nope, I won't argue. I think our hearts and minds and desires can be so very powerful. That is my favorite of all the stories in DIFFERENT SEASONS (and that's saying a lot, because all of them were A+)

Pick up a copy of the Best American Short Stories - it comes out annually, and you can occasionally find an older volume. Every year they have a guest editor (Sai King was "it" in 2007), several great authors have taken a turn. I have been turned on to so many writers I would have never read by this series. The editors read them blindly so you end up with a collection that includes authors you know and some you've never heard of. And then there's a blurb by each author in the back of the book where they explain how the story came to be. I have the collection from 1993 forward.

I need all these books.

Out of interest, what do you guys think of the short stories in Full Dark, No Stars? I enjoyed them to a certain extent but
felt the story about the woman who was raped was a bit colourless, not to mention tasteless (even though I liked the twist at the end).

If I had to pick only one, it would be the Mist. The whole concept of that story is brilliant, plus it gives the creeps every time I read it. It is amazing, SK can take something as mundane as grocery shopping and turn it into complete terror! I think of this story sometimes while grocery shopping.

Short stories:
1408
The Body
The Man in the Black Suit

But those just stand out right now. It is so hard to choose! Big Driver holds a special part to me right now though as well (that probably didn't come at right).
