An Ancient Giant - the tree with the largest diameter is El Arbol del Tule, an Ahuehuete or Montezuma Cypress growing in Oaxaca, Mexico in the town of Santa Maria del Tule. The trunk of the tree is 33 feet in diameter and has a circumference of 178 feet. Originally thought to be multiple trees that had grown and fused together, DNA tests have shown that it is actually all one tree.

Thought of you, Blunt, when I heard this story on NPR this morning. Wish I'd known it was there when I visited Tombstone a couple years ago!

World's Largest Rose Bush (planted in Tombstone, AZ in 1885, covers 9000 sq. ft.! The trunk is 12 feet around.)

This looks like and probably is a "species" rose; meaning, it has on its own root system (it isn't grafted to a root system taken from a hardier variety, as in the case of hybrid teas, for intance) which in turn means its root system is hardy and can withstand what nature throws at it. Species roses tend to be very hardy, a term which along with a tough root system includes disease and insect resistance. Another quality many species roses have is fragrance. I have several species roses in my yard and when they're in bloom they smell absolutely wonderful. If the rose above smells that way, can you imagine what it'd be like to be there? Oh my, now I have to visit it!

Here's the link to the story. It's called a Lady Banksia Rose. I'm definitely going to go back to Tombstone on one of my trips out to AZ just so I can see this!
