Honestly, when I first read this story I was about 12 years old. I always enjoyed Stephen King's work but this, by far, is my favorite. I can't quite put my finger on why but I will say this is the one story, out of all the others, that scared the shit out of me. This is a story that I will always be able to re-read constantly without even think about doing anything else.

I have a very strong thoughts on what i feel this piece contains. I feel that this story represents either the actual devil being present or the manifestation of the devil in Gary's father. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that he is involved within the writing of Gary in his final days. I feel that he has disguised his father as the devil and after all these years is having a realization of the suppressed memories. His brother mysteriously dies of a bee sting his mother never believes to be true, the man in the begining slaughters his family and blames it on ghosts. My opinion is that the memory is blurred over time, and rather than it being the devil, it is actually his father that he escapes. Whether it was a change of heart in his father or a barrier between good and evil, his father was present throughout the ordeal. He just happens to show up after the event, protests the bible, and makes him throw away the creel because it smells bad. To me this is a father who came close to committing another crime to his other son, and not being able to actually fulfill his intentions, and possibly feeling remorse at the end. Maybe I am crazy but this was my take on the story. It is that much more creepy to think of it in these terms, I have read it several times. Any thoughts appreciated.....

This storie really freaked me out, and even more when i read King's note on the storie, on how it was meant to be a true storie from his friends granpa. The way the boy loses the man in the suit is really scary because you don't know where he has gone.
