This is a non horror story. It's one of King's more poignant stories that I have read. A first glimpse at the writer other than the horror king. A fantastic story. One of his best.

I read this wondering were it was going then I reached the ending and I have to say it was really sad (in the way of breaking your heart or brining a tear to your eye).

I completely agree with Adrian. If this story doesn't break your heart, then nothing else well. I guarantee you that this story will break your heart to millions of pieces.

I've been reading Stephen King's novels since high school (around 1982) ever since my mom bought a copy of THE STAND. While his books have always had that emotional impact to its readers, even the horror novels, probably none so much leaves one sad and having lumps in their throats after reading THE LAST RUNG ON THE LADDER. Its impact lingers long after you finish reading the short story and sometimes strikes home to its readers because some of us in one way or another, probably failed too in our promises to a sibling or a close friend which sometimes ends in tragedy like the story. Classic Stephen King. Scaring the hell out of us and wrenching our hearts too.

One of the best short stories ever written. This story proves that Stephen is more than a horror writer.
