    Thank you! I double checked and it's "All That You Love Will Be Carried Away." Yes, he (Alfie) kept a journal or notebook of sayings he found on walls in bathrooms and stuff, and the "bool-it" reference was to his own little jingle about shooting himself. Poopie doopie you so loopy! (If you haven't read the book, that's another saying in the story.)

    One of my favorite of his short stories. Also "Viva ze bool" in Rose Madder (bool = bull).
