After his rescue from the shelter he was a mess. It turns out his liver was shutting down, he had one of the worst cases of anemia the vet had ever seen, he was infested with parasites and extremely malnourished. He also had kennel cough, a respiratory infection from the shelter.
Some of his teeth had been broken out and he couldn't eat on his own, he was also too weak and ill to have an appitite so I hand fed him pureed food every two to three hours with a syringe. This went on for nearly two weeks. He's now eating on his own but he was literally half dead... oh and he's cross eyed too to boot poor fella.
He took several good turns and started to gain weight when the fur around his little snout started to fall out. He was bald in a nearly perfect ring that circled his snout like a muzzle, as it turns out it appears as though he was healing there from a traumatic injury.
I called the shelter to ask them if they knew what happened to him and they said they had no idea.
Anyhow I think Our Fred is finally going to be ok (knock wood) so I thought I'd post a pic of him with his yellow african to share with you all.

Thanks so much for that story.... It is lovely to hear that this animal who has most probably had a pretty awful life is now set to live the type of life he deserves. May he give you many years of friendship!

My two are into their sixteenth year now and still going strong ! They live inside the house as there is too much wildlife outside that they would "seek and destroy" the vet reckons they have another ten years in them....

I don't mean to say it never crossed my mind that maybe investing so much in an animal was foolish. I have to say honestly that it did, but then it just kept on crossing.
