Name of the game...money. If there is a market, things will sell. If things are free, high traffic will result. Competition and all that.

My guess is that the paid channels will be movie studios and the like. Your average Joe is not going to get people to pay to view his videos when so many others are free.
They can't do this to me. Every home improvement I do, every quilt I make, every new thing I try to learn -- I ALWAYS go to youtube and hunt for someone who can tutor me in knitting, or squaring up a quilt or changing out my toilet. Please don't do this.

It's not just channels.... Youtube, in the articles (I read the one at Adage too), stated they intend to charge for online libraries too, whatever content that may cover... songs, videos, old movies, tv show clips, no doubt wherever copyright enforcement is involved...
If that's the case, then that thundering sound you just heard was the sound of people stampeding to use Vimeo.
Only problem with that is it appears that everything on Vimeo streams at a higher rate than my DSL can handle....
As I said that, just found a video more my rate of bitspeed.... have to look around there some more...
