The ONLY reason I know this is because we had a HUGE debate at my last job when I wrote "a SLA" and this snotty girl got all indignant about my grammar and we had to look it up. She was right.
But now I know so I'm sharing the knowledge. When using an acronym you use what the the letter sounds like. "S" sounds like "es" so you'd have to use "an." If it was something like "DEA," where the "D" sounds like "dee" you would use "a."
It's weird, I know.
