Our dear little black guinea pig, Licorice, has gone to the clearing in the field. He went peacefully in his sleep overnight, nearly 3 years old, perhaps before his time, but there were no signs of illness or pain leading up to his death. No guinea pig ever had a better life than Licorice, my two daughters loved him very much and gave him lots of attention. It is a rough job as a parent to watch your children cry over something that cannot be fixed.
Licorice was a great pet, very affectionate, and when he heard my voice at "veggie treat time" he would squeal in excitement and jump up and down. Jillian would snuggle with him for hours if I let her, and she would lull him into relaxation and he would make this little cute purring sound of contentment. Sometimes we would take him out to the yard to graze on dandelion leaves or just to get some fresh air. Licorice was also a good sport, playing the role of Gorlax The Magnificent in our little movie "Kids In Space".
Coincidentally, Licorice died the morning of the very same day that we were scheduled to pick up our newest pet, a 3-month old kitten that the girls have named "Freddy". Another coincidence is that Freddy is also jet black and a male, so in some ways it's like Licorice has been reincarnated as a cat! So while it was with a heavy heart that we said goodbye to Licorice, we have the joy of a new little kitten in our home. Freddy is full of spirit and ready to explore our house, but for now we're restricting him to his own room in the basement until he is fully vaccinated. Our elder states-cat, Paco, has needed some feline companionship since his sister Nuala died last year, but we are going to be careful and slowly introduce the two in phases so there is no drama, sickness or injuries.
Licorice: Rest in peace, little guy.
Freddy: Welcome to our world.
