I just finished reading the debut masterpeice, Carrie, and while spooky in some parts and eerie in others, it honestly felt more like an soap opera. Now, this is NOT saying the book was not scary. The book itself was very chilling, haunting, and twisted all in good ways. Not very gorey except for the pig scene involving mallets and knives and when Carrie is bathed in farm animal blood. As a reader that has only read four of Mr. King's novels, (all of which are masterpieces) I was not in the least way dissapointed in this one. It was noted as his first offical written and published novel in 1974 and for a book published back in that year, it still grabs the reader and helps you fully understand just how unlucky others are, as well as teaching their tormenters a valuable (and permanent) lesson. This is a just desserts novel but its much more than that. Its a novel to symapthize for the unlucky. the poor. the not so popular. not just in school but in life in general. they are seen on the streets, on television, on the web, everywhere. now what if these misunderstood, tortured souls had the power to strike back at their foes with terrifying results? how much worst would their wrath be if they were put down for so many years? could they destroy their own hometown or much more? the book ends on a cliffhanger ending with a letter from one woman to another in georgia about her neice gaining telekenetic powers as just a small child just like Carrie White but being totally oblivious to the Carrie and TK incident that took place in a small town in maine. Now here is one thing i would like to address if i may. Maine being 1,372.2 miles away from tenessee, (where i live. i was born in modesto, california) is a great distance but Stephen seems to think or somewhat assume that people that reside in tennessee seem to be, well, dumb. Yes there are dumb people here but there are dumb people everywhere. Some in tennessee are southern and keep to their roots, but there are also very intelligent people that reside here and are from here as well. Now i am not angry or offended what so ever by this, ( i found it comical) it just seemed to catch my attention and i wanted to see if anyone else here noticed it. Moving on to my next attention keeper. Notice after the town is burning down and not only are buildings, students, the high school, and residents burning but churches as well except for the Methodist and Catholic church. Stephen King was raised as a Methodist as some may not know, and his wife Tabitha, Catholic. See where this pattern is going now? Interesting, huh? But anyways i would highly reccoemend Carrie to any fan of stephen King or someone who just wants a good psychological/horror story. The following books are ones i have read by Stephen King and would like to read more but would like suggestions. Read: The Shining, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, It, Cycle Of a Werewolf, and Carrie. My choices: Duma Key, Lisey's story, Rose Madder, From a buick 8, Dolores Clairborne, The Stand, The Tommyknockers, The Dark Tower 1 and 2, Night Shift, Misery, Cell, The eyes of the dragon, The Dark Half, Needful Things, The Talisman, Salem's Lot, The Dead Zone, Cujo, Black House, and Bag Of Bones.
