Raise the Roof Beams, Stack the Stove Lengths, World, vis-a-vis you and SK!
Stephen King and Family (biological and bibliographical),
I spend little time visiting, like an awkward uncle, websites to post,
toast, or else quibble or pontificate. But, alas, my frustration in
the past few weeks urges me to do so. In this time,
I've read three different references to Stephen King's oeuvre as
being "pulp-horror" or "horror-pulp." The intention is to be
dimunitive and dismissive, an erroneous and shameless designation.
Au contraire--
The value of the work repeatedly shines through and, as a young
published poet, professor, and critic,*whose drive towards literature and creativity
was fostered by horror fiction, especially King's, I resent the
repeated, unwarranted characterizations. A stimulus to the diversity of
the imagination and books (I first came to George Seferis's
poetry as they hung delicately quoted in the frontispieces of several
chapters of 'Salem's Lot), the unstinting energy and prodigiousness
of the SK vision is one I savor. And feel I should thank him,
even in this remote, impersonal sphere.
My poetic mentor, Mr. King and et al., is a poet named Michael Heller**
who was great friends with Burton Hatlen, whose contributions
to poetry, from what Michael as told me, also extend to you and
your generosiy to the University of Maine. There is much grace
and light up there in Maine (I write this in lower NYC but am from
southeastern MA. Hail, Madame New England!).
All Best Wishes to all who use this site, but especially the
Author, his family, and all of their cherished associates, here and there.
Jon Curley
*In order of integrity, of course.
** Heller's The Constellation is a Name: Collected Poems 1960-2010 is out next
month from Night Boat Books.
