maybe i'm wrong...the memory plays tricks on you when you're 3000 years old...but...
didn't king repeatedly swear, up until shortly before it was released, that book 4 would not finish the tale of book 3...for the longest period of time, didn't he state in interview after interview that some/most DT fans would be PO's beyond belief because the story he had to tell...HAD to tell, had nothing to do with blaine and the ka tet and the end of book 3 ??
i'm pretty sure i'm right...also pretty sure he caved in, even though i know i saw interviews where he said he would not !
in my singular, completely outnumbered yet humble opinion....the opening and the closing are the weakest part of this book...they feel forced and contrived...and have not a bit of the heart, soul and sheer storytelling inventivess that had, up to that moment, permeated every page of the DT series...
too bad it foretold of things to come
now..the inbetween parts...?
the stuff from the past, the tale roland is telling...?
best stuff king has ever written: if not for taint of the inappropriate opening/ending...this would be my favorite book by him of all time...
king, imho, played chicken with his readers and blinked...
they'd of lived another day if DT 4 had been just the tale that was meant to be told...
and DT 5, 6 and 7 would have been better for it...king would've learned it would far better to wait for that door to open then to force it open...which, to me, is exactly what the last three feel like
but, tha is just my own opinion
The last 3rd of The Wastelands was a great ride. The cliffhanger ending was hard to take. I was like Annie Wilkes waiting for #4, "You better not screw this up SK!"
SK used to go to the cinema in the 50's on a Saturday morning. There the mini series' used to end with a cliff hanger ie a train that looks like it's just about to go over a cliff.then at the start of the next part the hero would stop the train just in time
They used to show these on TV in England in the school holidays in the early 70's
Hi Ho, really enjoying this book! Could some one please help explain what a 'thinny ' is? The Ka tet first saw one in Kansas I think! Thanks!!!
From the Glossary on the Dark Tower section of our site:
Thinnies are places where the fabric of existence has almost entirely worn away. These cancerous "sores on the skin of existence" have increased in number since the DARK TOWER began to fail.
Thanks soo much Ms. Mod! I didn't know there was a Glossary, gonna check it out right now. Thanks again!
