It didn't surprise me. Not all bad people are entirely without empathy. I'd go so far as to say that Junior and his pal felt better about themselves for their good deed. It reaffirmed their self-righteousness, i.e. that they are in fact the "good guys" all evidence to the contrary. Children often trigger a protective impulse in people which is ingrained.
