Do Junior and Frank change?

I got the book for Christmas and am on page 300 something, less than a third in. Junior and Frank have thus far shown themselves to be lacking in morals and humanity, as well as unselfish feelings such as concern and compassion. Now they're scouting for people in the evacuation zone (pre-missile) and almost run down 2 hungry waifs in the road - and would have if not for the tender condition of the car. Suddenly they're both worried that the kids haven't eaten and are missing their mommy, and they're actually gentle with them and want to find them food!

I want a spoiler here, folks. What is going on with these two?
I can't read anymore tonight or I won't get up in time for work tomorrow. But I need to know. Has the sight of the 2 hungry and frightened children somehow released their hearts from whatever cold stone entrapment they were in? Or are they acting out of concern for themselves and future evil plans?

I don't think anyone here is going to give away the story for you, that includes character development. One thing I was surprised at when I read the book a second time was I had a small bit of sympathy for Junior, due to his medical and mental issues. Something Stephen King does well is making characters who aren't just cut outs, they do interesting and complex things.

I always ask for hints at movies, too. Nobody ever wants to tell.
I'll have a little more time for reading tonight so hopefully I'll find out more about this situation.
