@ Haunted, I would agree, except the other novels on the list are tough competition. 'Salem's Lot was the best vampire book I ever read and definitely on my Top 10 novels and Top 10 King novels lists, but you know how these things play out. It's based on the judges.

Haunted, I agree! I have read a good number of Vampire novels, and 'Salems Lot is definitely the best so far!

'Salem's Lot is constantly wrestling with The Shining for the position of my all-time favorite SK novel.
    Both are brilliant.

It was very interesting to me, too, how "Jerusalem's Lot" was written as a short story. I've read Bram Stoker's "Dracula" once or twice, but much preferred Stephen's stab at the vampire genre here, and, later, with "'Salem's Lot". I believe in this instance, though, I still prefer the book over the film version. There's just so much more in there for Stephen to set up his own particular atmosphere for storytelling in this vein of writing. I believe the only "bad" thing I could find about the novel was, perhaps, the romantic stuff...sorry, but I just love a good ol' flesh-to-the-bone vampire movie

'Salem's Lot was my first Stephen king book and also one of my favorites. I used to work as a night shift attendant at the local hospital and one of my duties was to transfer deceased patients to the mortuary. I had done this many times, but after reading 'Salem's Lot i dreaded this particular job. The deceased were transferred on an old gurney and were covered with nothing more than a white bed sheet. Suddenly i found that i couldn't take my eyes off the form beneath the sheet, did the hand move? Is he still breathing?
My speed and efficiency greatly improved! Absolutely fantastic book.

It should be! I just finished it myself last night and was left with a strange feeling of unsettlement. It was a great story and SO well written, especially the final twenty sections or so. His use of imagery, theme, and symbolism really astounded me. It's the fourth SK book I've read (after Full Dark, No Stars, 11/22/63, and Carrie). Next up, The Shining. I can't wait

A voice of dissent here. Although I enjoyed Sk go at the vampire genre, I found the writing, dialogue especially quite creaky yeard later. I didn't like any of the film versions either. Carrie, however still holds up for me. Go figure.

I'm a great believer in rereading and Salem's is the book I reread the most times. Every time I discover some new scene that becomes my favorite. Besides, nothing beats a good vampire tale...
