Default Some brief thoughts on the subject of a sequel

This seems to be a fairly common topic surrounding this book - did Pennywise live on - is there more story waiting to unfold. My personal opinion is that a sequel would not be a great idea. This is one of those books I would definitely put onto my desert island list and I think that trying to force the storyline into a second book would cheapen and minimize the brilliance of the original book.

That said - I've come to realize lately that there already have been sequels written to some extent. Books like Insomnia for example and to some extent the new book - 11/22/63. I mean that in the sense that I've always kind of felt like Derry itself is almost as important an antagonist as Pennywise was. While the creature may have been vanquished, there is still this festering stew of a town that was left behind, and all the darkness that lays beneath it.

Is Derry the way it is because of the influence of Pennywise? Or was it because of the darkness in Derry that Pennywise was able to go on for so long?

I guess what I'm getting at is that I think King has done a great job finding the spirit behind the book and introducing it into other books without resorting to the same old tired structures of Hollywood style sequels.

I think that Pennywise was there long before Derry was. It makes you wonder if Mike Hanlon found any problems with Native Americans in the area before white colonization. I think Pennywise influenced Derry and made sure that there was always someone living there. Remember, even after he slaughtered the first white settlers, others showed up to take their place. But I agree that Derry continued even after the demise of Pennywise. He left an imprint on the area and so it will always be a dangerous place to live.

I think Derry is one of the "weak spots" of the Multiverse...allowing the Prim to "bleed through"...and that's why it's such a carbuncle on the backside of the world....

The arrival of It (as shown in the book itself) was a cataclysmic event which ruptured the landscape. It is my personal opinion that it also ruptured more than that. I believe that there Derry rests on what is more or less a "thinny" albeit one that now lays buried by countless tons beneath the sewers.

I agree with you that a sequel wouldnt be the best idea, however if IT survived it could be interesting to add in some short story of some kind in a future collection.

Atleast i hope that will actually happen someday, because Pennywise is prob the most interesting "monster" he has ever created.

I always wanted (to draw) a graphic novel version...at least maybe for some of the individual stories. If the Stand and The Dark Tower get the treatment, It definitely should!

Wouldn't need to have IT comeback as such, could just have Ben miss stamping on one of the eggs, hey presto Son or Daughter of IT

Maybe a Prequel would be better, i mean there are potentially millions of years worth of ITs history to explore.

I don't know, I think he told a lot of what happened in the past already. Really he wouldn't need to even bring back Pennywise, he could make a sequel about the remaining Losers Club or even just Big Bill or Ben and Bev. Maybe something new and dangerous starts to happen in Derry that kick starts Mike's memory and he calls the gang back.
