My first expousure to King was 2000 or maybe 2001 not sure. When I saw Green Mile for the first time. I didn't even now it was based on a King book. And I thought for myself what a weird movie. But even if it was weird for me it was also good.

I was 14 when the movie Stand By Me came out. Being a young teen girl I became obsessed with River Phoenix and immediately bought Different Seasons. I really liked The Body but found myself even more engrossed with Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and The Breathing Method (I didn't care for Apt Pupil). From Different Seasons I moved onto It and after that I was completely hooked on King's books. He remains my favorite author to this day (I'm 39 now).
My first exposure to Stephen King was probably Kubrick's The Shining, but for years I never read anything by him because I didn't read fiction for a long time and didn't think that people should read horror books. In the intervening years I saw Delores Claiborne, Shawshank, Misery, and others, so knew that King wrote more than 'creepy horror stories.' About 10 years ago, On Writing was the first King book I actually read, followed by The Green Mile and many more since than. There would be several long stories involved in explaining all the whys and wherefores of all of that, mostly for sincere if maybe misguided religious reasons. But that's probably best addressed in another forum.
