It's hard to talk about a whole short story collection as a whole. I finished Just After Sunset last night, and for the most part I was not pleased. Maybe there was something in me that wanted to see shades of the old Stephen King, but that wasn't the case, really. I was depressed, though. Depressed that I finished the book. It almost seems like a given to any Stephen King book.
Out of the thirteen, I had four favorites. The favorites being, N., The Cat From Hell, The Gingerbread Girl and A Very Tight Place. My least favorite was Mute.
I can't seem to rate a short story collection, so I rated each story:
1. Willa: 6.5
2. The Gingerbread Girl: 7.9
3. Harvey's Dream: 4.9
4. Rest Stop: 7.6
5. Stationary Bike: 6.6
6. The Things They Left Behind: 6.8
7. Graduation Afternoon: 4.6
8. N.: 8.0
9. The Cat from Hell: 8.1
10. The New York Times at Special Bargain Rates: 4.5
11. Mute: 4.0
12: Ayana: 5.1
13. A Very Tight Place: 7.9
I thought about the rating system heavily as I read "Just After Sunset". Giving a book ten ,means that you liked every little aspect to the story, and even my favorite Stephen King novel, "IT" I wouldn't give ten. So that is why my rating system seems a little odd. N., The Gingerbread Girl, The Cat from Hell would've gotten much higher of I hadn't really thought about it.
As much as "Just After Sunset" seemed a let down to me, I enjoyed the read nonetheless.
