Default Help for paper on Stephen KIng

    Hi all,
I am a student writing a paper on genre fiction as art, using Dolores Claiborne as my basis. Somewhere along the way I lost a critical piece of information I had hoped to use. It was a recollection By Stephen King of an encounter with a lady who told him she did not like his work. Further she thought he should write good books like "Shawshank Redemption." Naturally, King was unable to convince her that he actually wrote it. Does anyone know where this anecdote was published? Thank you
    Josh

Can't remember where it might be in print form but he's mentioned it in recent interviews on his book tour.

I believe he told that story in the CBC Radio interview: http://www.cbc.ca/q/uncut/

Welcome, Zodfather. Here's the exact quote from the Boston Herald:

“We moved to Florida during the winter. We didn’t really want to go, but we turned 60 and we had to,” he joked. While grocery shopping one day a woman whom King described as “120 years old, and (who) looked like skin wrapped on an orange” walked up to him and said “I don’t read those horror stories. I like uplifting things… like ‘The Shawshank Redemption’.”

Thank you all so much, you have just made my day. I really wanted to use this anecdote to establish how distorted public opinion can be. We are conditioned to believe genre fiction and /or authors of genre fiction can only write in one specific mode. Again, thank you all

The first time I remember hearing this story was in a 2006 interview he did with Jill Owens at Powells. The Once and Future Stephen King

If you have not as yet viewed the interview at the JFK Library, do so...it is available on the main page, lower right of page when it opens. Tom Perrotta interviews Stephen King and he tells this story as Ms Mod said in her post. I don't recall where it is in one of his books that I have. But his telling at the Library is a hoot...a story...may it do ya fine.
