    Smile Stephen King Virgin

Under the Dome was my first Stephen King novel. I have, of course, heard of him and seen many of the movies and television specials. (My favorite being The Langoliers.) I had just finished with a series by Lisa Gardner and while buying the last one, I came upon Under the Dome and it just seemed...Beyond interesting! I am a huge sci-fi geek and the thought of a huge force field coming down? Totally up my alley! I double checked with a few friends, asking if they thought I would enjoy it, etc. Like I said, I haven't ever read a King novel and I gotta say, I was a little intimidated. I mean, this man can easily be called the great American author of our time. So many Americans can't name a single American painter or anything but if you ask them about an American author, a good portion can name Stephen King.

So I purchased the eBook (love getting my books this way, can watch on my tablet, phone or computer, ANYWHERE!) and after finishing my Lisa Gardner mystery and lamenting that it was the last of the series currently. I then looked back to Under the Dome and picked it up and began it. Wow! That book just, amazed me! I adore all sorts of sci-fi but this was more than just sci-fi! I am from a small town, in the South, but its all the same, all the politics, all the greasing of palms, everything...It made the book so much better for me personally. I was all over government experiment so quick, I was really dumbfounded when the alien aspect did come into play. It just added another layer to a book that was already so riveting. I can see where some might find the large cast daunting to keep up with but it added so much more. In so many stories, you only get the perspective of a single group. This showed multiple views and explained why those people felt that way (how they were manipulated). I also love the asides, something I am not used to with what I usually read. I loved this book, absolutely! Now, I do not believe I will be diving into all Stephen King novels of the past, some look like they would terrify me to be completely honest. But I will definitely keep him in mind when looking for an awesome book, knowing it will be very possible to find one there...

Can you be deflowered by a novel?Anyway, if you like what you've read thus far-then don't let his supposed "terrifying" novels avert your gaze from some of his best material...form your own opinions, just as you did with UTD-don't let someone else's perceptions, or your own misconcpetions, spoil a magnificent body of work...

The blessing in disguise Stephen King's writing has been for me is I can never predict what the story will be like. So far every title I thought I wouldn't like (since I used to assume based on the book's title) I have loved. I seem still to have this mental habit, to think I already know what one of sK's books will be like, sometimes because "I saw the movie"; which may help explain why I've yet to read Shawshank, The Green Mile, Delores Claiborne, The Body, and others. I've outgrown, however, fear of Pet Semetary, 'Salem's Lot, Cujo, for instance, all of which I now very much look forward to reading.

I think it may be true certain readers need to get used to sK a bit before reading certain books, they should not start with this one or that. A host of members of this site, other than me, who are more expert, should be able to recommend appropriate titles.

So, welcome and stick around, keep posting so you can find what you need here!

Welcome to the SKMB! I'm glad you enjoyed UTD, I thought it was great as well. My first SK novel was Misery when it came out, and I have been reading him ever since.

The most science-fictional of his other books is probably The Tommyknockers, if you're up for another one. A lot of people seem to dislike that book, but it's one of my favorites by SK.

    We all float down here.

My first Stephen King book was "The Tommyknockers". A friend of mine was reading it at work and I made the comment that I hate"blood and gore". My friend told me that if I liked Science Fiction I would like "The Tommyknockers". He was right. That was almost 20 years ago and I have devoured everything Stephen King since then. There are some I didn't care for, but the majority are awesome.

If you liked the characters in UTD, you will love The Stand. In my opinion, it's the best book ever written.
