SK wrote in the into that he was afraid he had crossed the line with this book. I didn't think so. I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

He wrote brilliantly about some very touchy/taboo things...but if people came to it thinking it was a simple sad story about some child who lost their bestest friend...they deserve what they got...
I don't think he crossed the line. He wrote it as his muse spoke to him. I read this book once- placed it on the shelf and have never opened it again. It came too close to home for a re read.
This is one of SK's books I haven't read yet, but need to. I heard years ago that it was the first book he wrote where he actually scared himself. I saw some interesting background info concerning it on a biography of him I pulled up on YouTube a while back as well.
I don't think a writer of fiction should pay too much attention on crossing lines or one's limits. If you do, someday you may wake up and realize you've become Dean Koontz. Pet Semetary is probably the scariest SK book ever, it proves that in horror fiction there is no such thing as safe or happy ending.
It all depends on where the reader's 'line' is I guess. To me the horror genre is all about crossing lines. Otherwise, it wouldn't scare/revolt/give nightmares/make us leave the lights on or anything else good horror is supposed to do.
That being said I do not think that he 'crossed the line' with Pet Sematary. I think a lot of it can be touchy, but it wouldn't even come close to being the same if it wasn't.
Ain't no lines, or if there is, somebody's been in the big box of crayons again, and they will be in some very big trouble if they don't fess up.
HEYYY get back here!...don't you dare make me have to catch you dammit!!!
I loved this story. I did not think that he crossed the line. He probably felt as if he was tempting fate because he had kids of his own.
Only time I think Uncle Steve crossed the line( a lil bit) was when the kids in IT had sex. That did not appeal to me...but, like most things, that is a subjective feeling.
I don't think he crossed the line...but I could only read it once. And got spooked more than once when my cat would jump up on my lap.
