since75, it's funny you should mention teddy bears. I watched the movie Artificial Intelligence, and there is an animatronic teddy bear, which for some reason, really creeped me out. I think it may be the dead eyes.

GNTLGNT, if you haven't seen Toy Story 3, I recommend you stay away from it. There is an alive (as with all the toys) version of that horrible monkey serving as a night watchman / alarm system.

Alexandra19, for me, it was the scuba diving harpoon diver in Tomb Raider 2 that made me want to rush through the swimming parts. I remember mistaking him for Darth Vader (I was a lot younger then), and just wanting to get out of the water.

And 91rewoT, my brother has shown me some of Achmed; not really my type of humour, but I'll admit that he is funnier than scary.

And I just remembered the episode of "The Simpsons" called Krusty Gets Kancelled, with Gabbo, the talking doll. Funny episode, but those kids in the audience must have been traumatized by a clown operating a ventriloquist dummy (and if I remember correctly, the scene ends with kids fleeing, screaming in terror).

    Long days and pleasant nights.

She has it sitting on top of an antique organ. My kids always look at him funny and ask why he is sitting there when we are at her house. My nephew is the one who really doesn't like him, though. My mom has to remove the dummy from the room and put him away where my nephew can't see him when he is there.
Okay, a dummy with a cymbol clanging monkey!! THAT is scarey stuff right there!

Sometimes I steal pics from this site. I dragged that one to my desktop. If you never hear from me again you'll know why.

Maybe what's scary about a ventriloquist's dummy is the idea of man imparting animation to the inanimate, of man creating life, an idea which I think is a deep-rooted taboo. We're scared of some domesticated animals, very scared of most wild ones, we're terrified of what something alive which should not be might do. Beings which are neither inanimate nor naturally alive but somewhere in between are alien to a human society anywhere. They are monsters.

(Ms Mod, if the picture didn't come through you can just delete this post )

Here's the evil monkey my neice bought for me at an antique store. I've only had it out of the box on a few occasions...you all know why. If I ever heard those cymbols clanging I really would have a heart attack.

My oldest daughter is creeped out by ventriloquist dummies. ( and pennywise the clown) She love/hates the R.L. Stine book Night of the living dummy. There is also a 30 minute show based on the book, that she watched through her fingers. Have any of you ever heard of a movie called Dead Silence? If you're creeped out by ventriloquist dummies...this is the movie for you.

Tried to read this after a long absence from King's work. He's still at it. Republican bashing and race baiting. More than half the people in the US are white and conservative. Is King so myopic he doesn't care if he insults half his reader's? He wasn't like this when he started so I guess the answer is no he doesn't care now that he's rich. There's a whole world outside of New England Stevie.

a good writer does not try to write about what he does not know...Stephen writes about main and Florida because that is what he knows....he wrote about Colorado a few times as well and i believe he lived there for a short time if i am not confusing reality with fiction lol...and if his readers were so insulted why would they keep reading?

I think the real scary part was that the actual ventriloquist was the dummy, and the boy was the actual dummy....
