The description of what John Coffey 'takes' seems very similar to the 'doctors' in the little sisters of Eluria, a Dark Tower story.

Don't see it, the "Doctors" are living beings, while I believe that which Coffey "sicks up" is the essence of disease and pain...

There may not be any visible doctors, but it sure does look like John Coffey [like the drink, but spelled different] has a habit of coughing up what looks like deathbags...

I think Daniel Boone started the whole mess, after staying in that Holiday Inn one night....and the next he was out there moseying around in the desert?....and came across the snake-bit person?....and he pulled out his poukku and sucked out the poison? Too...there's the kiss in Lisey's Story...somewhat alike...or not...
