    Default Mrs. Danvers?

Please keep in mind that I have yet to finish the book!

I know it's dangerous to look through these boards for certain books that you haven't yet finished but this is driving me CRAZY! I am all the way through chapter 11. Mike had just gotten off the phone with John Storrow for the first time. But what I really want to know is who is Mrs. Danvers?! And why is Mike so afraid of her? I was probably too tired or reading too fast to catch it the first time and I've looked through what I've read so far and still can't figure it out. I'm not big on the idea of just reading from the beginning (it started a little slow for me and things are finally getting good). So I figured I would ask y'all!

    Thanks!

I just recently finished this and it didn't ring a bell.

I went HERE and I guess that's the reason why.

Mrs. Danvers is a nasty character from the book "Rebecca". The book is important to Mike Noonan in his understanding of how he relates to Sara Laughs. You may want to go back and catch up. If not, then reply back and I or someone else will fill you in at the risk of you being spoilered.

I don't remember any of it, but it's one of my favorite books now. Hope someone remembers the answer for you.

Mrs. Danvers isn't actually a character in the book, she was actually the rather sinister housekeeper in the novel Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. Mike Noonan talks about her as somebody he had dreamed about and felt afraid of. If I remember correctly, I think he tried to use the thought of her being in his lakeside home as an excuse not to go there and get on with his writing.

    Danvers, Mrs.

Mentioned by Mike Noonan in a dream. Not a real person

Ah, ok. Thanks everyone. I have a good idea now. I just didn't want to research it on the web for fear that I would end up accidentally reading something that ruined the book. Shouldn't be too much longer before I finish it now. It's gotten to the 'can't put it down' point.

As an aside, isn't Mrs. Danvers the name of the maid in "Father's Day" from Creepshow?

You're right Gaiaraven, the maid's name in "Father's Day" is Mrs. Danvers. Personally after reading the book Rebecca and seeing the movie Mrs. Danvers always kind of creeped me out.
