Continuity

This is one of my Favorite SK novels, so this isn't a REAL criticism, but...
In the beginning of the book, Ennis Rafferty has changed into civilian clothes in preparation for going home--
However, when Sandy looks through the Portal at the end of the book, he sees Ennis' service pistol, and his 'Big Hat', which suggests that Ennis was in Uniform when he disappeared.
Anyone else notice this?

I just assumed he took his pistol with him.

Didn't think much of it...since many law enforcement officers take some of their gear home, including their sidearms-which are part of them till they day they reach the clearing...
