I was a little (ok, maybe a little more than a little) skeptical of Gerald's Game at first. I wasn't going into this one blind so I knew what it would be about. I also have been reading the entries in the 'least favorite' type of posts and this book seemed to be a on a lot of people's lists. I don't let the opinions sway me but hey, there's got to be something to it if that many people are saying it.
I got a little more wary of it when I was around 10 or so pages into it when Gerald took his last breath. I mean, I had the whole rest of the book to read. With one character, who was chained to her bed.
But I have to say I am pleasantly surprised with how the story unfolded and finished. It didn't take me long to read at all and, while it did take a little bit longer than usual to get into it at the beginning, it was getting increasingly harder to put it down the farther I got into it.
I especially liked the ending with Jessie's 'specter of love'. If I had to guess what it was Jessie was seeing in her room I would have said it was either her imagination or it was some kind of Randall Flagg'esque villain. I never would have guessed that it was an actual man much less an actual man who was as messed up as he was. It threw me for a loop and for that I am glad. I enjoyed reading this story.
