    Default Not What I Thought

Advanced Warning! This post will contain spoilers!

I was a little (ok, maybe a little more than a little) skeptical of Gerald's Game at first. I wasn't going into this one blind so I knew what it would be about. I also have been reading the entries in the 'least favorite' type of posts and this book seemed to be a on a lot of people's lists. I don't let the opinions sway me but hey, there's got to be something to it if that many people are saying it.
I got a little more wary of it when I was around 10 or so pages into it when Gerald took his last breath. I mean, I had the whole rest of the book to read. With one character, who was chained to her bed.
But I have to say I am pleasantly surprised with how the story unfolded and finished. It didn't take me long to read at all and, while it did take a little bit longer than usual to get into it at the beginning, it was getting increasingly harder to put it down the farther I got into it.
I especially liked the ending with Jessie's 'specter of love'. If I had to guess what it was Jessie was seeing in her room I would have said it was either her imagination or it was some kind of Randall Flagg'esque villain. I never would have guessed that it was an actual man much less an actual man who was as messed up as he was. It threw me for a loop and for that I am glad. I enjoyed reading this story.

It took me a second reading before I admired the story...then I realized it was quite the little nugget of fun...

I'm with Gntl in that it took me a second reading. For some reason, it just didn't do it for me the first time. I really liked it the second time though, go figure

    Hi,

    Yes, me too exactly.

I REALLY didn't like it when it was published but I re-read it recently and completely revised my opinion.

    Long days and pleasant nights

    I agree completely with CarrieJo.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I began reading this book but put my faith in Mr. King's ability to tell a good story. By the time I'd finished Gerald's Game had become one of my personal favourites.

I don't even remember what to expect. All I remember was my mom saying that it was really good, so I began to read it. I enjoyed it the first time around. The whole idea of being tied to a bed with a creepy guy roaming around, not to mention a dog seemed eerie to me. Stephen King is great at writing high-tension novels. Why this is one of the most unliked Stephen King novels is probably because it wasn't what people were probably expecting. Other than that, I don't know.
    Put simply: I liked it.

I really, really liked Gerald's Game until I found out...

That the handcuff escape wouldn't have worked in real life!

    Sorry, I couldn't help it!

The first time I started this book years ago, I couldn't finish it because I thought it was boring. Plus other things were going on in my life that I didn't want to devote the time to read it. So when I found it packed away in a box, I thought-Why haven't I finished it? So I started it again, & it was weird, but I wanted to see how it ended. OMG!!! What a book!! I'm so glad I finished it! It really grossed me out & made me jumpy in the night. It's now one of my favorites! I also thought the Space Cowboy was Jessie's imagination, until the earring. So I give this book an A+!

I really enjoyed this the first time but, unlike SK's other work, I don't think I would read it again. Really not a lot going on. I like the language SK uses. Always a pleasure.
