They sh** in the same pit... A question

Does anybody have a clue to the following question: I've re-read Bag of Bones about five times, and I can never find out if Mike Noonan figures out what Devore meant about their fathers knowing each other (or, as Devore said, they "sh*t in the same pit"). Was Devore just blowing smoke for some unknown, unresolved reason, or was there some significance to this that I somehow missed?

Their great-grandfathers were associates...and there was a tie in with Ms. Tidwell(being vague to avoid spoilers)

Susan, I got the impression Devore was speaking the truth "as he recalled it". The clue might be that over the years stories change- just a little, but Devore's character, IMO, was telling a truth. If there was a greater significance, I've missed it too. Just that people from the same humble backgrounds ( loggers) could make it rich someday.

its been awhile since I read BOB, but you pose an interesting question that I too pondered over. I came to believe there was something definitely there.The association I made is based on SK doesnt tend to misdirect or mislead Constant Reader. i think Devores suggestion, altho crude, was supposed to be realistic and common. Which made it 'real'. I had a light ah-ha moment after rereading bob, but its been so long & I dont want to spoil it. But yes-its mentioned for a reason.
