i'm a little confused!

At the end of Misery King wrote "...unaware that his aching legs were in the same city but 50 blacks away...." what did he mean by this? Did he get both legs amputated? Was he talking about being back on 48th Street thinking about his weird encounter with the kid and the skunk? All answers are welcome! I just am trying to make sense of it all!

Here's the entire sentence:

"The hole opened and Paul stared through at what was there, unaware that his fingers were picking up speed, unaware that his aching legs were in the same city but fifty blocks away, unaware that he was weeping as he wrote."


I've never read the book, but what I get from that passage is that he has begun to write again, at a feverish speed I may add, 'his fingers were picking up speed...' He forgot about the pain in his legs, so they felt as if they were far away, even tough they were still with him.

I was disapointed with the movie, so unlike the book.
