Why "Beth"?

Just re-read "The Dark Half" for the first time since the mid '90s. Back then I couldn't for the life of me figure out why Stark kept referring to Liz as "Beth". Well, today, at 52 years old, I still have no idea!

Her full name was Elizabeth. Sometimes that's shortened to Liz, other times to Beth, and also Betty. It makes sense to me that Stark would choose a different nickname than the one Thad used.

Entirely possible--my mind just went in the other direction as being the logical reason since it's part of the story.
