As a Constant Reader from the onset of the "King Phenomenon", he's almost always equaled amazing to me...
Sai King's character development is so strong that often the reader becomes one with each character. As in real life, reuniting with an old friend can be quite an experience.
I think one of King's greatest strengths is evoking emotional reactions to the characters he creates, even if it's just a little Billy Bumbler with gold rimmed eyes.
If you have phenomenal story but poor characters in it, it doesn't work. If you, on the other hand, have fantastic characters but a thin story, it can still work, in my opinion. Stephen's characters are so rich and believable, he could write a novel with no story at all, just with couple of people who are talking in a room, and it would be more interesting and captivating than a lot of other writer's stuff.
SK's books have brought me to tears many times with the people who populate his stories. I become absolutely invested in the characters and feel for them when good and bad things happen to them. I have been known to yell and throw the books about at times. I remember the scene in DT where Jake is trying to save Oy and the only way is for Oy to bite into Jake's hand and he wrote about how shamed and sad that Oy felt to have to do that. And than Jake comforting him and saying it was alright. I still get misty at that. I felt the same way about Mr. Jingles in the Green Mile, one particular scene. These characters really are alive.
IMO, Sai King's character development is vastly superior to most (if not all) writer's out today. Period.
("All things serve the Beam")
Yes, his characters do become like our friends, and when one pops back into our lives, we are soooo happy to see them again, aren't we? And his character development is as deep in animals as it is in people. The way he wrote from Cujo's, Oy's, and even Big Steve's (The Stand, I think that was the dog's real name) perspective was absolutely brilliant. Period.
I wonder how many others read this thread title just as I did, and with outraged indignation, clicked on it, intending to run to Sai King's rescue...only to find out how very clever you are, Todevod!! Thanks for a great thread!!
