If there was a "No Swimming" sign, WHY WAS THERE A RAFT?
We all float down here.

Someone asked "Why was there a raft?" Have you considered it was put there on purpose and that mayby those teens were being used as a form of a test to test the creature's killing capabilites. I belive someone filmed the whole thing as well.
Either they were a Beta test for a larger purpose for the Acid slime or someone they knew who was rich hated them and knew they went there and killed them using his pet
Possible Timeline:
Raft built in lake. People swim in lake.
The blob appears some time after the raft has been built, kills swimmers.
A survivor, or witness, places the sign to warn people away. Would you swim out to retrieve the raft knowing what's lurking in that water?
Kids appear, swim in lake, attacked by blob, don't see sign. Now we have King's story the Raft.
Hey, flatcapman, why don't you write your own story and expand on the ideas you've shared? I think you can tweak it a bit so you have something original, only inspired by the Raft and not a copy. Just a suggestion. I wouldn't mention any of the AD&D low level stuff, though.
It's been a little while since I read the story, but didn't the characters say the raft is taken in after the swimming season is over, but just hadn't been taken in yet? Lake caretaker posts "No Swimming" sign, hasn't taken in raft yet, kids go for swim. Ta-da!
Have you read about the substance in thinnies? Roland led the army into the thinny and it consumed them. It warbled and used hypnosis to draw you in if you got too close. I think the raft was close to a thinny.
First of all, I have an idea that the creature may not be a "creature" but a normal [I]animal[I]. We as humans may eat pigs, ckws, ducks and all these other animals. How can we be sure it is actually a monster at all?
