Not sure I can help any but I'll try. Before Roland reaches the doorway to Eddies 'when', he has pavaler with the man in black (he has finally caught up with him because he sacrificed Jake!).During conversation he is told he will meet three doors. So he knows the guy with a monkey on his back means a man with a tremendous burden-this case drugs. So he approaches door very hesitantly and looks for clues. He only knows theres someone with a burden he needs to bring thru this door-literally. He at first understands very little and has no idea he will actually enter the mind of anyone else. Roland intends to go get this mystery person, but also knows he absolutely must get food and medicene first asap!when Roland opens door he sees thru eyes but it takes a moment for him to fully realize it. Doesnt take him long to figure out others can 'see' him as well--his eyes anyway. What an adventure he finds for himself!!

Gee forgot about the second half of your question! sorry. ok Roland also has problems bringing food back due to so recently losing his first two fingers and even drops part of food in sand when he returns! Do you recall reading that part? I cant figure out how he returns from doorway to his unconscious body form....hmm

I might suggest that you forget about the "how" and accept that he can.

The door on the beach that opens on Eddie's world, is a doorway to his mind/conciousness...Roland see's through his eyes and can take control due to a much stronger will, and Eddie is aware of Roland and can get a "taste" of the Gunslinger, but not to the degree Old Blue Eyes can...that's it in a nutshell from the resident nut...

The other people in this thread have explained it well, but I will add to it and say that in the mind of Stephen King, things often happen because they happen. In this case, there is no clear explanation for why or how these doors have appeared. Some force? Some god? the Tower itself? It's not important in this context. Read the notes to the short story "The Moving Finger" in Nightmares and Dreamscapes for more information on SK's feelings on this subject. Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the ride.

Suspend logic, you're dealing with magic. <3

I could add to this explanation, and so I will. It is kind of funny, since it is all make-believe or magic. However, there is still a steady stream of logic flowing. So, Roland is able to go back and forth because there are multiple whens and wheres, and he has connected to the body and mind of someone else (Eddie) in a different where and when. At that point that Roland enters a new where and when, he joins the body of the one who is living in that new where and when. Roland's actual body stays where he left it. His soul joins the body so that he can transform himself and enter into a new world. That is my interpretation, anyway.

I would second the answers of my fellow King-aholics above in that the actual nature of the doors are magical and not necessarily something that can be rationally explained. It's one of the many mysteries that unfold along Ka's wheel throughout Roland's journey. I think that Krisstina is on the money by suggesting that Roland is entering the mind of Eddie in a kind of mental sense - leaving his physical body behind on the beach. Somehow he is able to take hold of physical objects in Eddie's world and bring them back with him through the doorway into his.

And keep reading, this book isn't the only one in which doorways will play an integral part.
