Default Song of Susannah - First book by Stephen King I've read.

As an Australian I didn't think I would like Stephen King's writing and so I've actively stayed away from his work, until I was given "Song of Susannah" as a christmas gift. I always read books given as gifts, as it would be rude not to do so. In short ... I discovered that few, if any (probably no-one), writers today can match Stephen King's ability to communicate conflicting emotions or personalities within the one mind and do this in such a way that the story remains believable. Chapter to chapter, unlike so many books today, I could not guess the end of this tale. I'm buying the last book in the series because I like the story, don't know what's going to happen next and I enjoy Stephen King's writing style.

Hello, Robert, welcome to the board!!

You should definitely go back and read the whole Dark Tower series from the start. The Gunslinger and The Drawing of the Three are the first two books, the whole series is great!!

    Hi,

Welcome to the MB, and keep posting!

Glad you enjoyed it so much but can I suggest that you consider starting the seven volume Dark Tower cycle at the beginning with The Gunslinger (DT1) and Drawing of the Three (DT2)?

    Long days and pleasant nights

Gotta read the whole body of work man, coz you're depriving yourself of some of the best work ever committed to paper...

Yes do what the other people said. Your gift, while good, was given extremely out of order. Five gold nuggets waiting to be had before that one. Enjoy the series.

I agree with the above posts- if you can please read the start of this awesome journey before you go any further. Inorder
    The Gunslinger
    Drawing of the Thress
    Wastelands
    Wizards and Glass
After those continue the journey with Wolves of the Calla and finally the Dark Tower.
The insight into the characters backgrounds will only enhance the journey for you. Enjoy!

I agree with the posts above.

It's interesting to hear from someone who read the book out of sequence and thoroughly enjoyed it though! That says something for the writing that it can draw you in even though you must have been a bit lost concerning the characters and world.

Robert, I'm really curious as to why you thought being Australian would keep you from liking SK. Did you think his work was too stereotypically American, or was it something else? And welcome to the board!

I would not read Stephen King because of bias. I assumed. I made an you know out of you and me. And I missed out because I was an Wikipedia reference-linkAsinus. I was bi-assed.

I am glad I did not wait til it was too late.
