Here's what I think it is. If you go on purpose you physically go (meaning you are not in the real world anymore). But if your a gomer your mind/soul whatever goes, leaving a "body" here with no person inside left. That's why Scott's "body" is still there in the chair but no response because his mind/soul is in Boo'ya Moon.

Same goes for Amanda when she's in the hospital. Lisey finds her "body" there, takes her to Boo'ya Moon to get the rest of her. Her mind/soul and when she brings her back she is whole again. Any thoughts?

i believe that in amanda's case, only her mind was on boo'ya moon, unlike scott or lisey she wasnt there completely

I think it says somewhere in the book that some things and people can be in both places at once just as some things won't travel one way or the other. I think that it was just the part of Amanda that was aware of the world around her that was over at first.

I remember Lisey saying that she should take the time to bring them back. She was saddened and wanted to bring their awareness back to their physical bodies. They were staring into the pool and couldn't pull themselves away; therefore, they are trapped mentally. Therefore, those who are in a catatonic state are physically in our world, but they 're mentally in another world.
