Default Why no mention of Cannibal Holocaust?

In the introduction, What's Scary, he talks about The Blair With Project and movies that came after it that imitated. However he never mentioned Cannibal Holocaust. It bothers me a little that he said that the Blair Witch was imitated by other movies and not mention that The Blair Witch itself is an imitation. In fact The Blair Witch resembles Canibal Holocaust more than the Blair Witch imitations resemble it.

So why did SK not mention it?

I haven't read the essay, but the blurb on the web site says it deals with the decade of film 1999-2009. It's my understanding that CH was begun in 1979 and released in 1990. Also, while there's the setup of 'found' film cans, the films sound quite divergent to me in terms of setting, characters, tone and action.

I see your point but it still seems odd that he didn't mention it even in passing. Yeah they were pretty diffirent movies but they both have more in common than other lost footage etc type movies.

My guess is that he probably hasn't seen CH. In the actual text of Dance Macabre he condemns Friday the 13th and Last House of the Left for their artless violence as well as some others like The Bloody Mutilators and The Ghastly Ones. It may not be artless, but CH is light years beyond any of these movies in terms of violence. If he has seen it, maybe he doesn't care for it. Other than Argento's Susperia, he doesn't talk about much in the way of Italian horror. Lucio Fulci was just entering his splatter phase in around 1979, but he gets nary a mention either. Maybe SK just missed these titles or didn't care for them.

Again, note that the essay that Crimson Door brought up deals with film from 1999-2009. The films you mention don't fall in that category.

Cannibal Holocaust didn't seem like it was trying to be scary, just going for shock value. Nothing wrong with that, there's a time and place for shock value, but I can't really compare the two works.

True, but I was just talking about the films being mentioned in the work as a whole. Still, even Zombie didn't come out until 79 so it probably wouldn't have crossed his radar until after the book was already out or, at least, in production, so you are correct either way.
