I never understood this process, so could someone enlighten me? If Stephen King wanted to re-release Rage, bring it back into print, could he? Or is it gone forever now?

He could if he chose to and it would also be up to the publisher if they wanted to do so.

At this juncture, probably would be best to leave it in limbo-just my humblest of opinions...

I think Rage's return would be an event for King's fans. I can't quite see a reason for him to stop selling the book, but he does, anyway. I rather want him to has his soul in peace, so whatever he decides is fine for me.

while i understand some of kings reasonings...the book is out there, nonetheless: to act as if this act of self censorship will, in the end, have any affect is somewhat preposterous, especially given the internet and the ease of scanning/printing

perhaps the book, considering the increase in bullying these days, did not have as much effect as king feared it might have: clearly, other societal forces were and are at work

perhaps, the very fact that he wrote that book, with all its issues , so very long before all these horrendous events, might be indicative of a moment to use that fact as a starting point to create discussions about the actions the characters take within the book, rather than censoring and having the discussion turn on that
