This is probably my favorite stephen king book. It is certainly one of his most realistic (with minor exception to the "in the painting" scenes) and probably one of the most relatable due to the fact that thousands of women a year or more are subjected to this kind of insanity. This is the novel that people who think they know what stephen king is about should be introduced to. This is the novel that anybody has resisted reading His work before should start with. I read IT when I was 12 years old in catholic school. I brought the book to school and had been reading it in the school during library time for weeks before nuns finally decided to see what this massive book this kid had been reading. I took the book from my mother who got it from a book of the month club. Needless to say, she didn't know I had it and that was that. I was addicted and in serious trouble. I found Rose Madder finally at 31 years of age. I was so moved by every frame, although I have to admit being lost on some of the painting bits. My wife, who never shared my affinity for horror or Stephen King i general became curious on what was so special about S.K. and asked me to start her on a book she would be most likely to get into, enjoy, relate to without being lost. I gave her Rose Madder
