    Default just finished dolores...*spoilers*

So I finished Dolores Claiborne on Thursday night; took me nearly 4 weeks to read it (shocking, I know - after all, it's only 300 pages long!), but it took me a little while to actually get into the story.

I did enjoy it, but felt the pace didn't really pick up until after Dolores had killed Joe, and felt it took forever for Dolores to finally find out what he had been up to with Selena (although, the scene on the ferry was spectacular IMO).

I liked the link with Gerald's Game especially since that was what I read before I started this one.

I really liked Vera, and was completely surprised at the end when it was revealed her children were dead (didn't see that one coming!).

One niggle I had (being from Scotland) was the way Sai King had written some of Macauliffe's words - I couldn't help but think he'd written it the way people think Scots sound, and not how we actually sound! (Although I suppose everyone does it!)

Anyone else find the story a bit slow to get going, or just me?

I found it slow going at first as well, and the different format: monologue took getting used too as well. But overall I liked it, and I thought the movie was alright too. And finding out about Vera's children at the end sure was a shocker!

    Hi,

The first time I read it I felt a bit like that, and then I saw Kathy Bates bring Dolores to life for me in the move and I immediately went back and re-read it and loved it (and have read it a couple of times since).

Rent the movie and see if that happens for you IMO.

    'Six pins, Dolores, six pins!'

    Long days and pleasant nights

I know that not everyone feels this way but I loved the story right from the get-go. And I loved it even more once I got the audio version. The actress who used to play Cliff's mother on Cheers - something like Frances Sternhagen - she is phenomenal! She IS Dolores! I "listen" to the book at least once a year. Maybe because I'm a woman of "a certain age" and a yankee but that old girl really resonates with me! And I ALWAYS turn the Welcome mat toward the visitor - Vera got that one right!! Sandy

Yeah, I'm Scottish too and found myself ignoring some of Steve's use of Scottish dialect. Overall though, I thought Dolores Claiborne was one of Steve's best novels and characters. I can't really get it from my mind. As for it being slow; IMO it went really FAST for me-it was just such a unique read.

I enjoyed the book and the movie. Really just loved Kathy Bates. I find her to be a great actress.

I think this is one of the greatest pieces of writing King's done. His ability to hold onto Dolores's voice and tell the story through that amazes me.

Dolores IS a bit of a slog initially, but I thoroughly enjoyed it overall...never thought much about the dialect issue-but if he ever featured a Southeastern Ohioan, I'd probably feel the same way...if he didn't speak "Redneckese" correctly...

I saw the movie before I read the book last year so I knew the story going into it for the most part.

Maybe the move and Kathy Bates performance influenced my opinion of the book like it did Mr Dalgish above but I loved it.
