Question Is it worth it?

Is the novel worth reading? I saw the movie and found it to be completely ridiculous, but the concept sounded golden when I read what the movie was about. I didn't know it was a book at the time (I was around the age of 13 when I saw it) and now everytime I go to buy an SK book I consider Carrie, and put it down for something else. Is it worth it to read this one now, or later? Are there books by him that you feel should be read first, and if so, is this one of them? I've only read: Night Shift, SK Goes to the Movies, Different Seasons, Pet Semetary, Salem's Lot, IT, The Shining, Cell, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and thats all. So I'm stuck with what to read next... suggestions? Carrie? Yes No? Hmm..

Never judge a book by the movie. Carrie the book allows the reader to paint the pictures within their own mind. The character development is stronger too. IMHO I would read Carrie.

You mentioned several other SK books that you have read. Did you enjoy them? I read his books as they were published- old aged person here May I suggest Bag of Bones, Lisey's Story, his newest book Full Dark No Stars, The Stand. And of course a favorite of mine- The Dark Tower series. Please do not give up on a book because of the movie.

    Hi,

Yes, it's very much worth reading but if I were you I'd definitely read The Stand next.

Or start the amazing journey that is The Dark Tower with The Gunslinger AND The Drawing of the Three.

Or sample his latest offering, Full Dark, No Stars, but one thing's for sure, you can't go wrong no matter what you pick IMO.

    Long days and pleasant nights

Yes, I enjoyed all of the ones I read very much. I just am limited on cash and want to purchase ones that are highly rated by others before reading any that I'm unsure of. I don't usually read fiction, but dean koontz and stephen king have been my go to fiction writers. When I was a kid I liked to read educational books, and turned to R.L. Stein most of the time as a fiction fix. When I do read fiction, however, I usually take the word of the fans (I usually end up agreeing with them).

I used to go to libraries, but I always liked buying books better.

And thanks for the suggestions. I was considering Bag of Bones and might go with that next. After figuring out what other novels were about, I purchased The Stand and am currently working on that. I think I'm going to read Carrie the next time I have one of those trips where I buy around 5 books at a time! haha.

    Happy Holidays everyone!

I was wondering this myself, I do remember even sai King not being that enamoured with this novel and it hardly made it to print.
I tried reading it once, couldn't get into it, so I jumped to The Shinning and forgot it.
Still it lies in my closet at my fathers place.

This is one of the few King books I've read three times (along with THE STAND), and will probably read it a few more if I have anything to say about it. I think CARRIE is an excellent book with strong characters, very relatable to anyone who's ever been to high school. Billy and Chris may be a bit exaggerated, but the gist remains. I also love the portrayal of Carrie, in the book, which is vastly different from either Sissy Spacek or Angela Bettis. Awesome book and definitely recommended reading.

I actually remember identifying with Carrie in a twisted way, and really felt the book. Definitely worth the read to me...

Horror.Mama - I would definitely give Carrie a try. If, for some strange reason, you aren't intrigued with it, you could always try Lisey's Story, The Shining, DT, or The Dead Zone...to name a few.

    Happy Reading!

While Carrie is definitely not King's strongest book, it is still worth a read if you like him. Not only is a good read in itself, but it shows you where he began and how different of a writer he was in the beginning.
