Finished this one at the weekend. I much preferred it to Wizard And Glass. I don't know if I'd say this is the best one so far for me, but it was sterling stuff. The characters of Calla Lynn Sturges and the relationship the ka-tet builds with them was well thought out and engagingly written. King ratchets up the tension here, and the final battle seems to EXPLODE out of the book. A real page turner. Am really beginning to enjoy these adventures of Roland, Susannah, Eddie, Jake and Oy again.
And THAT ending! Wow, only someone with King's audacity would even ATTEMPT that, let alone PULL IT OFF!!!
I agree with you there, this is my favourite of the series and a welcome relief after Wizard and Glass, which is easily my least favourite. I dont know why but I just dont enjoy the Susan story at all and tend to skip it if I'm reading the series through.
Wow - downside of working in a bakery - you'll be sitting at the computer reading some interesting posts and theeeeen, yup, you're asleep.
I liked Wizard & Glass more - but I will admit that I had to drag myself to the book with a fair amount of skepticism. I didn't want the narrative to leave all the characters I cared about behind for so long. In the end, I ended up loving the book - I think it gives great depth to Roland and you get to see more inside his head.
That said, I agree that after Wizard & Glass, Wolves presents a welcome change of pace and for me, the rest of the saga is a crazy race to the finish.
