I haven't read the book in a long time. But wasn't Duddits the way he pronounced his real name, Douglas? Because he couldn't say it correctly, and I seem to remember the other boys seeing he preferred them calling him Duddits, so they did to make him happy and soon enough they just thought of him as Duddits. I'm almost positive, but not quite.

That is what I remember, Douglas Cavell pronounced his name "Duddits" instead of Douglas, thus everyone, including his mom called him by that name.

Welcome to the site! tashabunny is correct--"Duddits" ("Douglas") is the nickname imposed on Douglas Cavell, in Dreamcatcher, due to his speech impediment.

I wish I could imagine why your Grandfather called you that.
