Default The Fart Book by Stephen King

Since last thanksgiving I have been on a Stephen King rampage. I've read 11 of his novels and a zillion of his short stories for the first time. (including Under The Dome (twice), IT, Desperation, The Stand, Dark Half, Tommyknockers, Bag Of Bones, Duma Key (twice) and Cell)
I heard Dreamcatcher wasn't that good, so I put it off. I finished it today and have to say it wasn't an easy read but I loved it. I fell in love with Duddits. I LOVED the parts in Derry and that the Losers were part of the story.
It took me a while to get the concept of the tracker brothers' office, and the hospital room and the warehouse, but I got it.
For me there were personal reason for loving the book. It touched the three places I've lived all my life (Worcester, Grafton & Athol MA) and ended in a place I am very familiar with - the Quabin. There were references to Pearl Jam, Reservoir Dogs & several horror movies I love so very much.
Curtis was a bastard, and I can see how people see him as a Big Jim prototype, Praise Jesus.
Then there were the farts. I have never seen a book focus so much on ripping juicy ones. Every time he used a new descriptive phrase I laughed.
Put that all together and I think this has cracked the top 5 for me.
    PS:

    the cruiser warbled
    the gun blatted
there were a zillion arc sodium lights
    Jonsey landed splayed
    and
Owen thought, but did not say.

Damn those arc-sodiums. They just keep popping up, don't they. King and Hill like to describe the goshdarn things as such when "streetlights" work for the rest of the world.

If "candle" works, why call it a "reduced beef tallow cylinder inserted lengthwise before cooling with a paraffin-infused braid of natural textile that burns evenly and with a considerable lack of smoke."

As far as farts go, whenever I read "arc-sodium" I think Silent-Butt-Deadly Egg-sulfurs.

Street-Fushing-Light. Streetlight. Lamp if you gotta. Enough with the damn arc-sodiums. You guys aren't getting paid by the word anymore!

    Hi,

But surely an arc-sodium is the apotheosis of all streetlights, Bryan? LOL

You know, I never noticed this until some time back I read one of your posts about the dreaded arc-sodiums. Now it's like a speed bump when I'm reading. Arc-sodium. Pause. Why not call it a streetlight? Begin reading. Look back at arc-sodium. Pause...

    Ditto what you said, Bryan.

I've said it a thousand times, as a guy-farts are unfailingly funny-no matter how old you are...

Yup gotta agree, I notice them everywhere now too and mentally change it to streetlight, all courtesy of Mr James' hatred. It really gets under his skin, so when I was reading Cronin's "The Passage" and came across his use of the dreaded "arc~sodiums" my first reaction was to wonder if when Bryan reached that part of the story he would throw it away in disgust and give up out of pure frustration.

King has a lot more sayings he uses regularly ... haven't got time to track them down right now though since I have "other fish to fry!" Maybe later.

Wow...I thought I was the only person to notice the "arc-sodium" reference...I noticed this years ago and just thought it was a north-east thing...what about "turnpike"? Is that a north east thing too or is it called a "freeway" like everywhere else?...lol

I'm a fairly well read man, and quite adequately educated - yet I find farting absolutely hilarious. So this book was a pleasure for me. King broke a few taboos with this one - I do know that was his intention,.
