    Default Troublesome techncal flaws

I thoroughly enjoyed Under the Dome, but was disappointed by some very obvious technical flaws following the fire. The fire extinguished itself, and the survivors could not breathe, because the fire had consumed all of the available oxygen within the dome. How could the propane generator in Remmie and Carter's shelter and the car that they drove to the black box site have run without any oxygen in the atmosphere? Internal combustion engines need oxygen to operate (the fuel has to burn) every bit as much as people do. The mechanics of the tire breathing also had some critical flaws. Was anyone else bothered by these issues?

You're the first one to mention it that I recall.

I didn't have a problem with the technical stuff...The characterizations of the towns people seemed waaayyy over the top and unbelievable to me...It will be hard to pick this book up again...who knows... it may grow on me later

Welcome to the SKMB , Barney B. In no way was I bothered by those issues. Not techon-savey re how car engines run etc. I read the book to enjoy the characters, and story line, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Found the book an excellent read. Hope to see more of your posts.

    Hi,

Indeed, what part of 'fiction' doesn't the poster understand?

Looks like it's gonna be one of those days, huh?

Is it too much to ask that you suspend belief for the time it takes you to simply enjoy the book? Like John said...it's FICTION!!! If you want real life I suggest you read non fiction. After all, I don't recall anyone saying anthing about vampires not being real after Salems Lot came out.

lol... I read classic science fiction so technical flaws don't bother me at all I guess it would be difficult to totally ignore technical flaws if you know better but try not to let them disappoint you. Guessing from other UTD threads, some readers were bothered by other things as well but I got so wrapped up in the story, I didn't notice any of them lol. Welcome to the boards!

I have no problem extending belief for things that are intended to be part of the "fictional" aspect of the story - i.e existence of vampires or alien children who can create the dome on earth for their amusement. And, as my post stated, I did enjoy the story. I don't think it was the author's intent to fictionalize whether or not a car can run without oxygen. I think it was an error that, to me, detracted from the story. I was just wondering if there are other readers out there who find such errors distracting from the otherwise enjoyable story. That would give us something in common, and something to talk about. Bully for you if you are not bothered by such things - to each his own. No need to pass judgment or criticize or suggest that I don't understand the meaning of fictional.

It's like this for me: First, the fire didn't consume as much air from the shelter because it wasn't as available; second, there was enough O2 for the survivors to survive, so all the available O2 was not consumed; third, who knows what the hell would happen under a dome?!

I loved this book. I find that if I am completely engrossed in a story line and love the characters I really don't notice any so called technical flaws. Also, we all know that Sai King is not all that keen on research and would rather provide the readers with entertainment and stories that they will remember.
